    What Is Professional Stone Cleaning?

Professional stone cleaning restores natural stone surfaces — sandstone, limestone, granite, marble, slate, and Portland stone — to their original condition by removing atmospheric soiling, biological growth, paint, cement staining, and environmental deposits.

Unlike DIY cleaning or general pressure washing, specialist stone cleaning uses calibrated methods matched to the specific stone type. Each stone has different porosity, hardness, and chemical composition, and using the wrong technique can cause permanent damage including etching, spalling, and discolouration.

Our stone cleaning service covers domestic stonework — garden walls, gate pillars, window surrounds, and stone-clad facades — as well as commercial buildings, churches, monuments, and listed structures across Liverpool & the North West and the North West.

Whether your stone is blackened by decades of London pollution or green with biological growth, professional cleaning reveals colour, texture, and detail that has been hidden for years.

What Happens When Stone Is Left Uncleaned?

Natural stone is porous. Over time, atmospheric pollution, rainwater minerals, and biological organisms penetrate the surface and establish themselves within the stone's pore structure. This isn't just cosmetic — it's actively damaging.

Black crusts formed by sulphur dioxide pollution trap moisture against the stone face. In freeze-thaw cycles, this moisture expands and contracts, causing surface delamination — the progressive loss of the stone's outer layer. Once delamination begins, it cannot be reversed; only replacement resolves the damage.

Biological growth — algae, moss, lichen — produces organic acids that chemically attack calcium-based stones like limestone and sandstone. Left untreated for years, this biological acid etching can dissolve fine carved detail and decorative mouldings permanently.

Iron staining from fixings, railings, or water run-off from metalwork creates rust-coloured marks that penetrate deeply into porous stone. The longer these stains remain, the more complex and costly the removal process becomes.

    Our Proven Process

    1

    Stone Identification

We identify the exact stone type, its condition, and any previous treatments or coatings that may affect the cleaning approach.

    2

    Test Patch

A discreet test clean is performed to confirm the chosen method achieves the desired result without any adverse reaction on the stone.

    3

    Method Selection

Based on the test, we select from DOFF steam, TORC micro-abrasion, nebulous spray, or chemical poultice — whichever is safest and most effective.

    4

    Systematic Cleaning

The stone is cleaned methodically, working from top to bottom, ensuring even coverage and consistent results across the full surface area.

    5

    Post-Clean Assessment

Final inspection to check for any residual soiling, staining, or areas needing additional treatment, followed by aftercare recommendations.

    Key Benefits

    Stone-Specific Expertise

We identify your stone type and match the cleaning method precisely — no guesswork, no risk of damage from inappropriate techniques.

    Reveals Original Character

Professional cleaning uncovers colour, texture, and carved detail hidden under years of soiling — transforming the appearance of your property.

    Prevents Structural Decay

Removing biological growth and pollution deposits stops the chemical and physical processes that cause stone deterioration.

    Heritage & Conservation Compliant

Our methods satisfy conservation officers, Historic England, and planning authority requirements for protected structures.

    Extends Stone Lifespan

Regular professional cleaning can add decades to the functional life of stonework by preventing progressive surface loss.

    Adds Property Value

Clean, well-maintained stonework significantly enhances kerb appeal and perceived property value — particularly important for period homes.

Stone Cleaning Methods, Materials & Specialist Techniques

Our stone cleaning toolkit includes four primary systems, each suited to different stone types and soiling conditions. The correct choice is determined during our initial survey and confirmed through test patching before any full-scale work begins.

DOFF superheated steam cleaning is our most frequently used system for natural stone. Operating at temperatures up to 150°C at very low pressure, DOFF dissolves biological crusts and atmospheric soiling without mechanical impact on the stone surface. It is the standard specification for limestone, sandstone, and Portland stone cleaning.

TORC micro-abrasion is a gentle blast-cleaning system that uses a controlled vortex of fine inert granulate, low air pressure, and minimal water to remove carbon crusting, paint layers, and heavy atmospheric soiling from robust stone surfaces. It is particularly effective on granite and hard limestone where biological crusts are thick and resistant to steam alone.

Nebulous spray cleaning uses a very fine mist of water applied over extended periods — sometimes 24–48 hours — to soften and loosen century-old soiling without pressure or chemicals. This is the gentlest method available and is specified for the most fragile and historically significant stonework.

Chemical poultice treatments are used for specific stain types: iron staining, copper verdigris, oil penetration, and paint ghosting. A reactive paste is applied to the stained area, draws the contaminant to the surface over several hours, and is then removed cleanly.

Sandstone — including York stone, Darley Dale, and buff sandstones common in Liverpool Georgian and Victorian architecture — responds best to DOFF treatment followed by biocidal wash to inhibit regrowth. The natural warm tones of cleaned sandstone transform the appearance of an entire building.

Limestone and Portland stone — the dominant facing stone in central Liverpool's civic and commercial architecture — requires careful pH-neutral approaches. Acid-based cleaners cause irreversible etching on these calcium carbonate stones. Our methods are exclusively pH-neutral or alkaline.

Granite, being extremely hard and non-porous, tolerates more assertive cleaning methods including TORC and controlled pressure washing. Polished granite facades are treated with specialist polishing compounds to restore reflective finish after soiling removal.

We also clean reconstituted stone, cast stone, and artificial stone products used widely in post-war construction. These materials require individual assessment as their composition varies significantly between manufacturers.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How much does stone cleaning cost?
Stone cleaning is typically priced at £15–£40 per square metre depending on stone type, soiling severity, access requirements, and chosen method. We provide detailed estimates after a free site survey.
Will stone cleaning damage carved details?
No. Our methods are specifically selected to preserve carved and moulded detail. DOFF and nebulous spray cleaning are both non-contact methods that remove soiling without any mechanical impact.
    How long do results last?
Depending on the stone type and location, results typically last 10–20 years before significant re-soiling occurs. We can apply biocidal treatments to extend this further.
    Can you clean listed buildings?
Yes. We regularly clean Grade I, II, and II* listed buildings using conservation-approved methods. We provide method statements and documentation suitable for planning and heritage reporting.
What types of stone do you clean?
Sandstone, limestone, Portland stone, granite, marble, slate, terracotta, faience, and reconstituted stone. Contact us if you're unsure about your stone type — we'll identify it during our survey.
Do you remove paint from stone?
Yes. We remove paint, limewash, and modern coatings from stone using DOFF steam and TORC micro-abrasion, depending on the stone type and paint system.
    Can you remove iron staining?
Yes. Iron staining from fixings, railings, and water run-off is treated with specialist poultice applications that draw the iron deposits out of the stone pore structure.
How long does stone cleaning take?
A residential facade typically takes 2–5 days depending on size and method. Nebulous spray cleaning for sensitive structures may take longer due to extended soaking periods.
    Do you provide test patches?
Always. We perform a discreet test clean before committing to full-scale work, confirming that the chosen method delivers the expected result safely.
    What areas do you cover?
All London boroughs, Liverpool, Wirral, Cheshire, and Manchester. Contact us to confirm coverage for your postcode.
